More than a voice will end with the performance of two theatre plays by artist Guy de Cointet (Paris 1934- Los Angeles 1983), introduced by Hugues Decointet, director of the “Guy de Cointet Society”. The introductión will be in French, with a simultaneous translation into Spanish and Basque languages.

His research and play with language, the use of humour and his capacity to transit between different media have made Guy de Cointet a reference for different generations of artists. He is also a crucial figure to approach the links and exchanges that are established between theatre, performance and contemporary art since the 1960s. Tabakalera is exhibiting two historic pieces by this artist: My Father's diary (1975), featuring Sarah Vermandes, and Going to the Market (1975), featuring Mary Ann Duganne.

Guy de Cointet (Paris, 1934 - Los Angeles, 1983) was fascinated with language, which he explored primarily through performance and drawing. His practice involved collecting random phrases, words, and even single letters from popular culture and literary sources - he often gdc_portrait_buste.jpgcited Raymond Roussel's novel Impressions of Africa as a major influence - and inserting these elements into non-linear narratives, later presented as plays, to an audience. He is recognized as one of the most important, if overlooked, figures of Conceptual art in California in the 1970's, having strongly influenced a number of prominent Los Angeles-based artists, including Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley, for whom both drawing and performance weigh significantly in their practices. Guy de Cointet’s oeuvre has been the subject of numerous institutional exhibitions such as recently at Culturgest, Lisboa and M-Museum, Leuven. His works are part of prestigious collections all over the world including LACMA, MoCA, Los Angeles, MoMA , New York, Tate Modern, Londres, Reina Sofia, Madrid and Centre Pompidou, Paris.

His performances were shown recently in Le Tripostal, Lille, at the Playground Festival, M-Museum, Leuven, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.

A catalogue dedicated to his work was published by Flammarion in 2014. More recently the publication Théâtre Complet , focusing on Guy de Cointet’s theatrical work, was edited by PARAGUAY in 2017.
