In her artistic practice, Anna Irina Russell uses sculpture and installation as a basis for exploring non-hegemonic communication processes. She often employs play as a tool to investigate, highlight, and subvert certain pre-established communicative structures that tend to go unnoticed. In recent years, she has worked with soft materials and inflatable membranes, exploring a specific animal communication process in which organisms expand their volume or inflate a membrane to communicate or protect themselves from danger. Through these elastic organisms, Anna Irina creates a space for interaction and reflection on different forms of communication, challenging the perception and limits of the body.
She has shown her work in spaces such as: Fundació Joan Miró (Sala d'Espera, 2024, Barcelona), La Panera (Solo si huele a tierra, 2024, Lleida), Arts Santa Mònica (L'altre costat, 2024, Barcelona), MACBA (Lorem Ipsum, 2021, Barcelona), La Casa Encendida (Inéditos, 2021, Madrid), Bombon Projects (Una luz cegadora, 2021, Barcelona), CCCB (Feminismes!, 2019, Barcelona) among others. She has recently published Tomar aire, an artist's book by the publishing house Brillo.
