What is the motivation behind a collection? At what moment is one aware that all of those books acquired are starting to take shape and create something greater? How do I manage, sort and, above all, show it?
In addition to discussing these issues, we will have the pleasure of enjoying some of the desktop publishing from the collection of Gabriela Cendoya.
The collection is quite eclectic. I started buying books of art in general and especially of painting, from many years of university, interested more the contemporary art. At that time, the photography was only one part of in what I was interested. The comics, in its immense majority in French language, also form an important part of my library.
Most of my books of photography, autopublished or not, are relatively recent, let´s say not more of 10 years. Retrospectively, it would correspong to the so called Spanish "revolution" or the famous boom of the photobook.
I buy books of photography of a compulsive way for 6 or 7 years. Not only the Spanish books of photografy though it is an important part of the collection. Across the social networks, blogs or webpages of editorials, the circle of knowledge has been enlarged of photographers, small editions or foreign publications and it has made that grows the collection.
In recent years many publications have appeared, not only fanzines, of major importance and ambition, published in small issues or even handmade in my library. I am sensitive to the object-book... Although at the moment of buying books, I don´t distinguish if they are or they are not autopublished, I am interested in both of them.
I often look to Japan, which has a huge amount and variety of publications, it is imposible to control everything that is published there...
I will try to bring to the session of Atlas an eclestic set which is a true reflection of the collection, with very different books: from personal diaries to sets of photographs recovered in markets of Brazil, from little known authors with their first publications to stars of photography that also choose autopublishing, as Alec Soth.
