Starting from the portrait, Azucena Vieites presents a set of images in which critical distance and intimacy converge. Aware of the ideological power that underlies the camera’s mode of reproduction, the artist activates a device with which to destabilise the eye trained in the identification, recognition and immediate classification of the object of its gaze. The effect of estrangement is produced using low-fi technologies and supports such as the mirror, with which she appeals to a participation in which the observer is included. A way of proceeding that projects a power of indeterminacy on the represented image and allows for a better understanding of the constructed nature of the attributes, features and poses that structure the portrayed subject.
