Berserker, Pablo Hernando, Spain, 2015, 102’, OV with spanish subtitles. DCP.
We think about the Friday and Saturday session as a double; the two films share the same director and the same sense of the uncanny, which is how one might explain what happens when genre cinema is subverted and transformed into something else. Berserker is film noir, but of the strange kind: there is a murder, there is an investigation, there is a decapitated head tied to a car steering wheel. But there also is humour and a 30-something character – writer Hugo Vartan – who is going through one of those typical crises that happen when you are 30.
