How does one listen to someone who questions the very way one listens?

Voz Sorda II Chiste Raro [Deaf Voice II Strange Joke] is an investigation and performance project related to sign language (SL). The idea is to make an online compilation of jokes in SL, drawn from the deaf community in Gipuzkoa and stage a selection of them.

In this project, the joke is viewed as a cultural and ideological artefact, which these communities use to circulate a pleasing discourse about themselves.

This reseach project, enframed within the context of The Listening of the Observatory, programme developed with the collaboration of DSS2016 throughout this year, seeks to highlight the way being deaf leads to specific forms of being-a-person and being-in-the-world with the potential for questioning other forms, typical of the hearing world, which are structured around listening and the oral voice as requirements for humanity and as metaphors and practice for political participation.
