From the East (D'Est), Chantal Akerman, Belgium, 1993, 110'
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Chantal Akerman captures the reality and mutation of old soviet territories filmed from summer to winter in a series of dynamic and static shots.
From East Germany to Moscow, passing through Poland, Lithuania, and the Ukraine, it records the bodies and faces of anonymous masses and their illegible expressions, while walking or simply waiting for who knows what. Buildings, landscapes, snow, and sunsets are filmed, and a mass of visual and audio impressions are offered up to create a fascinating impressionist poem.
