An amateur theater group must face the changes caused by the economic and cultural reforms introduced in China in the 1980s. The new model will lead to the company's privatization and its conversion into a strange Disco-Rock band. Two young couples are part of the frustrated troupe. Unable to communicate sentimentally, they try to articulate an uncertain life, trapped between the promises of economic modernization and the weight of tradition and ideology.
