Erlea Maneros Zabala (Bilbao, 1977) lives and works in Los Angeles. She studied Fine Arts in the Department of Painting at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and in 2003 she completed a Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. Along with Kate Fowle and Renaud Proch, she was a co-founder of the travelling non-profit Art2102. In 2018 she received the Gure Artea award.
In 2020 she opened the Norusta exhibition within the Bikoitza Museum project at San Telmo Museum in Donostia-San Sebastian. In 2018 she presented her work in the exhibition Works 2017-2018, in the CarrerasMugica gallery in Bilbao, and her work was included in the temporary exhibition Después del 68 in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. In 2017 she presented her recent work at Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles, USA. Exercises on Abstraction was inaugurated at the CarrerasMugica gallery in Bilbao. Her work was included in the group exhibitions 4,543 Billion. The Matter of Matter, in the CAPC Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, and Colección per amor a l’art. ¿Ornamento=delito?, Bombas Gens Centre d’Art, Valencia. In 2016 the monographic exhibition Erlea Maneros Zabala was inaugurated at the MNCARS, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid. In 2014 the Redling Fine Art gallery in Los Angeles (USA) dedicated an exhibition to the artist. Her work was included in the collective show La piel translúcida, obras de la Colección Iberdrola, in the Fundación Iberdrola, Bilbao. En 2013 she inaugurated Erlea Maneros Zabala: Past Work at Redling Fine Art Gallery, Los Angeles. She exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao together with Xabier Salaberria and Iñaki Garmendia. In 2012 she presented the exhibition Pilgrimages for a New Economy at the Reva and David Logan Center for Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Chicago. Peregrinaciones para una nueva economía (Pilgrimages for a new economy) was also the title of two exhibitions hosted in parallel by the Maisterravalbuena galleries, Madrid, and CarrerasMugica, Bilbao. Her work was also part of group exhibitions that took place at the Cristina Enea Foundation, Donostia-San Sebastian, and at the Wyspa Institute of Art, Gdansk, Poland. In 2011 she inaugurated individual exhibitions at the REDCAT gallery, Los Angeles, at the Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City, and at the Norwegian Stiftelsen 3.14 foundation in Bergen. In 2010 her work was shown at the Manifesta 8 biennale: Murcia Region in dialogue with North Africa, Murcia and Cartagena.
She participated in the group exhibitions Antes que todo, in the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M), Madrid; Picture Industry (Goodbye to All That), in the Regen Projects gallery, Los Angeles; and Immaterial, in the Ballroom Marfa Arts Center, Marfa, Texas. In 2009 she participated in the group exhibition After the Final Simplification of Ruins, in the Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz. And the CarrerasMugica gallery in Bilbao put on a solo exhibition of the artist’s work. In 2008 she obtained a residency scholarship at the Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul. She also hosted her solo exhibitions in the following venues: the Seamen’s Art Club, Hamburg; the Fellows of Contemporary Art artistic center, Los Angeles; and the Redling Fine Art gallery, Los Angeles. In 2007 she inaugurated the solo exhibitions Erlea Maneros Zabala: Exhumation, in the Queen’s Nails Annex gallery, San Francisco; and Erlea Maneros Zabala, in the Abstract Cabinet at the Sala Rekalde in Bilbao. The research project The Backroom, in which she participated, was also presented at the Kadist Art Foundation, Paris.
