In the photographic images produced from the colony, stimulants are represented roughly in two ways. On one hand, we have the images of the production of coffee and cocoa as a driving force behind the economic activity of the colony: (photographs of plantations, drying facilities and factories). On the other hand, we have the backstage colonial images, which were not made to be shown in the metropolis, where we see the consumption of stimulants as a fundamental part of colonial life (settlers drinking and smoking, concubines photographed next to packets of tobacco...).
In this session a series of images will be shown and a discussion will be held on the role of stimulants in the colony in terms of production (the basis of the colonial economy) and reproduction (essential for the reproduction of the colonial social system).
