Gema Intxausti

Gema Intxausti's work straddles sculptural practice. Her initial works with rags and her Sellotape pieces can be included among the proposals that marked the renewal of the languages of sculpture in the Basque Country in the nineties. Her work later acquires a more narrative hue where references to the cinema, music or literature occupy a very important place. Recently, she has resorted to drawing and photography to develop, using quotation and appropriation, various projects in which it is possible to identify strategies close to those launched by conceptual art.

Gema Intxausti (Gernika-Lumo, 1966) lives and works in Gernika. Intxausti studied Fine Arts at the Faculty in Leioa (UPV/EHU) and then moved to England to study film at the University College for the Creative Arts. Between 1989 and the mid-90s she took part in various workshops, organized at the Arteleku centre and taught by, among others, Ángel Bados, Pepe Espaliú and María Luisa Fernandez. Intxausti’s work has been recognized in various competitions and by awards such as the Gure Artea in 1991 or the Fine Arts Fellowship of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia in 1994. She has taken part in collective exhibitions such as: Suturak, Museo San Telmo, San Sebastián (2014), Gaur, Hemen, Orain, Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao (2001), Gema Intxausti/Azucena Vieites, Galería DV, San Sebastián (1997), Intxausti, Muniategiandikoetxea, Peral, Arteleku, San Sebastián (1994). She has recently presented her work individually in the exhibitions Wilder is the Black, La Taller, Bilbao (2014) and Meanwhile… rapture, Sala Rekalde, Bilbao (2014).
