In her first film, the Hungarian director Elfi Mikesch portrays the world of a teenager from East Berlin who dreams of the Caribbean and Hawaii and fantasises about a luxurious life and “a great love affair”.
Carmen is 16 years old and lives with her mother Ruth and her brother Tito in an estate on the outskirts of the city. Her father, a Puerto Rican soldier, abandoned the family and all that remains to remind them of him is a handful of exotic postcards and his collection of Caribbean and Hawaiian music records. These memories lead her to imagining a life better than the working-class life of Germany in 1976.
