Ion de Sosa (Urnieta, 1981), is a director and director of photography with a degree from the ECAM.

His first full-length feature entitled ‘Androids Dream’ premièred at the Berlinale in 2015, and enjoyed an extensive run at Spanish and international art centres and festivals such as the Viennale, Lincoln Center, Barbican Centre, and the Reina Sofía Museum. It is a loose adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick that brings together the hallmarks of Sosa’s filmmaking: the use of 16 mm film, frontal and open shots, a mix of costumbrism with touches of science fiction, his very unique use of time and composition, and his particular sense of humour.

These contrasts can also be found in his work as director of photography on Chema García Ibarra´s films. Sosa has worked closely with this director for years, even co-directing his latest short film ‘The Golden Legend’ with him, which premièred at the Berlinale 2019 and was selected at the San Sebastian, Ann Arbor, Palm Springs, andAmerican Film Institute film festivals.

He was the director of photography on ‘The Sacred Spirit’, Chema García Ibarra's first full- length film, which premièred at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2021 and won the Feroz Arrebato Fiction Award and the critic’s choice Fotogramas de Plata award; on ‘Karen’ from María Pérez Sanz, which premièred at the Seville European Film Festival in 2020; and on ‘El Futuro’ (2013) and the short piece ‘Aliens’ (2017) from Luis López Carrasco, which both premièred at the Locarno Festival.

Sosa’s most recent works as director of photography include the feature film ‘La Parra’ from Alberto Gracia, the short film ‘La Niña Mártir’ from María Pérez Sanz, and the short film ‘Contadores’ from Irati Gorostidi (which premièred at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critic’s Week in 2023). His latest work as director of photography on a feature film was ‘El Fantástico Caso del Golem’ form Burnin’ Percebes, which was filmed this past summer (2022).

As director, Ion de Sosa is currently in the development stage of his next full-length film ‘Balearic’.

In 2017, he founded the production company Apellaniz y de Sosa, together with Leire Apellaniz. Together, they have produced ‘The Sacred Spirit, ‘The Golden Legend’, ‘Fe’ from Maider Fernández Iriarte, ‘Contadores’ from Irati Gorostidi, and ‘Inmotep’ from Julián Génisson.
