Javier Ortiz-Echagüe holds a degree in Art History and a doctorate in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. He has taught at the Complutense as well as the University of Castilla la Mancha, Carlos III University of Madrid and the University of Navarre and has been a guest researcher at New York University, Aix-Marseille University and the New University of Lisbon.

He is the author of Yuri Gagarin y el conde de Orgaz (Museo Jorge Oteiza, 2014), joint coordinator with Horacio Fernández of Fotos & libros. España 1905-1977 (Museo Reina Sofía, 2014), and editor of the anthology of texts by José Val del Omar titled Escritos de técnica, poética y mística (Museo Reina Sofía, 2010). He curated the exhibition Norte de África. Ortiz Echagüe (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, 2013) and was assistant curator for Desbordamiento de Val del Omar (Museo Reina Sofía, 2010).

Outside of the academic sphere he has given classes in the Blank Paper school in Madrid and has collaborated in a diversity of workshops and seminars, including El Trigo: alimentación colectiva in Harinera ZGZ (2018) together with Julián Barón.
