José María Avilés was born in Ecuador. He studied film direction at the University of Film in Buenos Aires, Argentina and at the Elías Querejeta Film School (EQZE) in San Sebastián. He is a film director, producer and programmer. His films have been screened at festivals including Rotterdam, San Sebastián, Mar del Plata, BAFICI, Márgenes, São Paulo, Biarritz and Underdox, among others.
