Juan Canela (1980. Lives and works in Barcelona) is an independent curator and critic. Co-founder of BAR project and Azotea, Juan is a member of SYNAPSE - The International Curators' Network at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin) and curator of the Opening section at ARCO Madrid. He has curated projects such as Jazmín López: A noir, E blanc, I rouge, U vert, O bleu, at UTEC for Revolver Galería, Lima (2016); ¿Por qué no aquí?, a public programme and workshop at SOMA Mexico with BAR project (2016); The Reflection of the Mineral, The (Re)Action of the Image, a video programme for Herding Islands, Rats and the Anthropocene at the University of the Philippines – Los Banos, the Philippines (2015); Hablo, sabiendo que no se trata de eso, a project with works from the La Caixa and Macba collections with performances and interventions from contemporary artists, Caixaforum, Barcelona (2015); Lesson 0, curated by Azotea for Espai13 Fundació Miró, Barcelona (Sept 2013-Sept 2015); ¿Por qué no lo llamas entropía?, curated by Ariadna Ramonetti for the 0 edition of the Guadalajara Contemporary Culture Encounter (Mexico) (2015); Ignacio Uriarte: 1&0s at Marco, Vigo Museum of Contemporary Art (2014); ¿Estudias o trabajas?, La Ene, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2013); Lanza una roca y a ver que pasa, La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2013); or Ref.08001, Nogueras Blanchard, Barcelona (2010). He was selected to attend the SYNAPSE Workshop 2015 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlín and was one of the guests at Surrounding Education, a two-day programme focused on education and pedagogy in relation to the curatorial and artistic spheres at De Appel Art Center, Amsterdam (2015). Juan is currently working on a project to exhibit the CV collection at the Alcobendas Art Centre, Madrid (2016); and Cale, cale, cale! Caale!!!, a project that questions the place of magic, ritual and the irrational in relation to nature for Tabakalera San Sebastián (2017). He writes for magazines of the ilk of A*Desk, Terremoto Magazine, Dardo magazine and SOUTH Magazine.
