The 14th International Film Students Meeting offers with this master class the opportunity to get to know firsthand João Salaviza’s experience. This young Portuguese filmmaker will share with the students some of his short films such as ARENA (2009), CERRO NEGRO (2011) and RAFA (2012). Furthermore, he will talk with them about his recent transition from short to feature film with MONTANHA (2015) which, after passing through the Venice Film Festival, will be presented in the Zabaltegi section of the International Film Festival.

João Salaviza b. Lisbon, 1984. Graduated from ESTC - The National Film and Theater Academy (Lisbon) and Universidad del Cine, Buenos Aires. His feature debut MOUNTAIN will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival - Critics Week. It comes on the heels of a trilogy of internationally award-winning short films: RAFA (2012), which took the Golden Bear at the Berlinale; CERRO NEGRO (2012), which was selected for the festival in Rotterdam; and ARENA (2009), which won the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the Festival de Cannes. His short films were selected by more than a hundred film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Tribeca, Rotterdam, London, Pusan, São Paulo, Sarajevo, Tampere, IndieLisboa, Vila do Conde. He received fifteen other awards, including the Award in Memory of Ingmar Bergman at Uppsala Film Festival. In 2012, the Centre Pompidou in Paris presented four of his films in a retrospective program.

João Salaviza also directed the short films STROKKUR (Belfort, Gijón, FID Marseille, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid 2011); CASA NA COMPORTA commissioned for the Portuguese architecture national exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2010; HOTEL MÜLLER on the work of Pina Bausch (2010); and TWO CLOSE (Karlovy Vary, Take One award at Vila do Conde 2004) while at the film academy.
