Self-publishing has seen an amazing boom in the past decade. Stuck in-between the tradition of artist books and the activism of punk fanzines, this practice is multi-faceted and claims various influences. As a consequence of this new trend, a lot of platforms and structures have been developed in order to share these independent publications with the public: festivals and fairs, museums, catalogues and blogs, libraries and collections…
Zines of the Zone is a non-commercial and nomadic project which aims to promote DIY productions around Europe. Their aim is also to focus on photography in a way that would cross the artistic practice of photography with the use of pictures as documents.
During this talk they will shortly present the phenomenon of self-publishing, its economy, the idea of creating a library, of making it mobile and the wish to share the philosophy of "Do It Yourself".
In the November Atlas session, we will get to know the members of Zines of the Zone. Leaving laziness aside, they got their van, designed a contraption as an exhibitor and took to the road on a road trip to show their collection.
