Michael Taussig was born in Australia and studied medicine at the University of Sydney. He holds a doctorate in Anthropology from the London School of Economics. 

Among others, his bibliography includes books such as The Devil and Commodity Fetishism in South America, 1980; Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man: A Study in Terror and Healing, 1987; The Magic of the State, 1997, and My cocaine museum, 2004.

Michael Taussig's field of study, which the author refers to as fictional criticism, can be defined as gonzo anthropology; a field of study that combines real facts and fiction, ethnographic  observation, historical archives, literary theory, and memory.

Currently, Michael Taussig is a professor of anthropology at the University of Columbia, both in New York, as well as at the European Graduate School (EGS) in Switzerland.
