Natalie Bookchin

 

Natalie Bookchin is an artist who works with video, installation, and other media.Her work is exhibited and screened around the worldincluding at MoMA, LACMA, PS1, Mass MOCA, the Pompidou Centre, MOCA LA, the Whitney Museum, the ICP Museum, and the Kitchen in NYC, and La Virreina Center for the Image, Barcelona. She has received numerous grants, awards, and fellowships including from California Arts Council, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Durfee Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, California Community Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the Daniel Langlois Foundation, a COLA Artist Fellowship, the Center for Cultural Innovation, the MacArthur Foundation, a NYSCA Individual Artist Fellowship, a NYSCA/MAAF award, and most recently a Bellagio Arts Fellowship. Her  artwork has been commissioned by  the Tate, Creative Time, LACMA, and the Walker Art Center among others.


Bookchin collaborated extensively in the 1990s and early 2000s including as part of the art/activist collective RTmark, with Lev Manovich, and on net.art projects with Alexei Shulgin, Heath Bunting, and others.  She is currently working on a film in collaboration with the Spanish Roma association Lacho Bají and the Barcelona based artista collective, LaFundició. Also in progress are a  series of video montages of mass protests and uprisings, depicting fantastic spaces filled with colors,  signs, megaphones, gestures, and bodies, and people together, performing and enacting resistance. Bookchin attended SUNY Purchase, NY,  the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Independent Study Program. She was a faculty member at CalArts in Los Angeles from 1998-2014, and is currently Professor of Media at Rutgers University. Bookchin lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
