Bodies #2 Skin Picking is a body-focused behaviour described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edition) under the name ‘excoriation disorder’ or ‘dermatillomania’ which is characterised by persistent scratching or pinching of one’s own skin. Creating a dialogue from historical accounts, scientific articles, personal archives, feminist critical theory and YouTube narratives, this project aims to trace a kind of genealogy of clinical discourses in relation to women’s skin, while at the same time giving an account of those practices and feelings that go too far and/or become problematic.
