Irene González-Lopez is a postdoctoral researcher at Kingston University in London.

She lived in Japan for eight years where she studied Japanese Studies and completed a master's degree in Film Studies (Kyoto University). On her return to Europe, Irene completed her doctorate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London), where she investigated the representation of sex work in Japanese postwar cinema. Her publications explore topics of sexuality and gender, staring and female authorship. In 2018 she co-edited the first English-language book on actress and director Tanaka Kinuyo (Tanaka Kinuyo: Nation, Stardom and Female Subjectivity; Edinburgh University Press). Her passion for Japanese culture has led her to work on contemporary Japanese and manga art projects, and to collaborate with British Film Institute, Japan Foundation and Barbican Centre in London.
