The question behind this focus is simple: Why don't we know Teresa Villaverde's films? The Lisbon-based director (b. 1966) has five feature films to her name on the international festival circuit. Alongside Pedro Costa she has been one of the best known-figures in the 'third generation' of Portuguese cinema. Yet, she is entirely unknown in our cinemas, as is so often the case with so many names and film makers...
The time has come, then, to devote our screen to Teresa Villaverde, protagonist of the Focus and OhPortugal! season during this month. Villaverde began her career as an actress in À Flor do Mar (1986), directed by Portuguese master-filmmaker João César Monteiro. After that, she blazed her own trail. And to conclude the season, Teresa Villaverde has selected a key film in Portuguese film history: Paulo Rocha’s Os verdes anos (1963).
