Descripción Larga

What are the public spaces next to our school like? How do they transform the relationship between the school and the district? School peripheries is a call to develop art and education projects in spaces at educational centres, in districts, cities or towns.

JAKINTZA IKASTOLA 2015/2016 SCHOOL YEAR

The project presented by Jakintza Ikastola in Antiguo (San Sebastian) was selected at the first call.

Their proposal stems from a desire to transform the passageway that connects Calle Heriz and Calle Escolta Real. It is a unusual place, as it is used by both the school community and residents of the district. In order to make it a more welcoming place, they are looking at different places in the district and coming up with ideas that can be used for the alley.

The aim of all this is to strengthen ties between the school and the district, taking the school out into the district and making some points of the district the "school".

It is a collaborative project which is being developed between the Jakintza school community (students, teachers, workers and parents), the Tabakalera education team and residents and associations in Antiguo.

SCOPE OF WORK-CONTEXT

In recent years, thanks to projects such as "La ciudad de los niños” (City of children), concepts such as citizenship, citizen participation, school and education are more broadly understood. Public spaces, streets, squares, districts, schools, etc. have become work spaces and a background for developing arts education projects, offering opportunities for social change.

In this regard, the Tabakalera cultural project, through its education department, proposes bringing these processes together and working on cultural production in conjunction with the educational community. We believe that contemporary culture and artistic practices are unbeatable tools and areas for the research and development of learning processes and creative alternatives and this will be one of the characteristics of our project.

BACKGROUND

The “Pedagogies and public space” line, developed by the education department, and the "Auzoko Hitzak" pilot project provide the background to this call. Auzoko Hitzak is a participatory project developed during the 2014-15 school year in collaboration with three schools in Egia and other groups in the district.

In this process, we have detected the need to strengthen the educational community. Therefore, the main objective of this call is focused on investigating the existing relationships between the school community and its environment in order to strengthen them. To do this, we will use the dynamics of cultural production.
