Breves encuentros, Kira Muratova, Unión Soviética, 1967, 96’
In Brief Encounters (1967), Kira Muratova herself plays Valentina, a Ukrainian councilwoman imprisoned for the conventions and behaviors considered essential to being an exemplary Soviet citizen. Her husband, Maksim, is an unconventional geologist who abandons Valentina from time to time to go on expeditions. During one of which he meets Nadya, a young waitress who travels to the city and ends up working as a maid at Valentina and Maksim's house. This love triangle serves the director as a mockery of the idea of utopian love, while revealing her shrewd understanding of the relationship between work and home.
Kira Muratova did not have an easy film career, and Brief Encounters, like most of the films that bordered on criticizing the system, was banned by the communist administration, being accused of immodestness and far from the spirit of a good citizen.
