This is a lecture that Albert Hofmann gave in Bilbao on October 18, 1989, in a symposium-homage to the German philosopher, writer and historian Ernst Jünger. Both of them shared an interest in altering perceptions and states of mind through the use of substances, with the aim of widening the horizons of consciousness and human thought. The lecture highlights the importance of these experiences in the forming of Ernst Jünger’s thoughts and their links to the problems that were emerging in the fields of philosophy and science at that time.
