During the 4th century, Egypt was a province of the Roman Empire. Its most important city, Alexandria, had become the last bulwark of culture confronting a world in crisis, dominated by confusion and violence. In 391, hordes of fanatics vented their wrath upon the legendary Library of Alexandria. Trapped behind its walls, brilliant astronomer Hipatia, a philosopher and atheist, struggles to save the wisdom of the ancient world, without noticing that her young slave Davo is torn between his secret love for her and the freedom he could attain by joining the unstoppable rise of Christianity.
