One of the most daring new games for 2020 asks us to wait in a huge cave system for 400 real days. The biggest hit during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a Nintendo game in which players look after an island, carry out daily routines and relax with friends. The video game, frequently associated with action and dynamism, has also proved this year to be a place for slowness and resistance. But this is not new... nor is it necessarily better. In this talk, we will explore the so-called slow games, their history, their design philosophy and their players, always thinking about how these react to and reflect the times we are living in, marked by an accelerated pace that urgently calls for pauses and silences.
