Maite Gurrutxaga studied Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country and the University of Barcelona. After graduating she studied illustration at the Escola de la Dona in Barcelona.
She started illustrating in 2008. Since then, she has illustrated books for children, youth and adults. She has also applied illustration to other media such as posters, diaries, press, letters, apps or murals.
In these years her work has been recognized with different awards, such as the Euskadi Prize for Literature in Illustration of Literary Work for the comic Habiak (Nests) in 2014; or in 2015, the Lazarillo Prize for Illustrated Album for the MartÃn project, with text by Alaine Agirre. In 2023 she received, together with Mikel Gurrutxaga, the 1st Miguel Calatayud Villa de Aspe Illustrated Album Award for the album Lo mucho que tengo. Her work has also been selected several times (2013, 2017, 2019 and 2023) to participate in the Bratislava Illustration Biennial or Illustrating life Beijing (2017 and 2019).
