Kata, a 43-year-old widow, has an affair with a married colleague at the factory where she works. She wants to have a child, but he, already with two children, does not. Then she meets Anna, a 17-year-old teenager, who lives in a reformatory, and takes the young woman and her boyfriend under her roof. In Örökbefogadás, Márta Mészáros tells the story of a beautiful friendship between a lonely woman and her “daughter”.
Örökbefogadás was the first Hungarian film to compete in Berlin, won the Golden Bear for Best Film in 1975, and also made Márta Mészáros the first female director to receive this award. In 2019, the copy restored in 4K was re-released at the Berlin Festival, in the Berlinale Classics section.
