(1932–2016)

Electronic music pioneer, composer, accordionist, researcher and teacher, Oliveros dedicated her life to developing and teaching the practice known as Deep Listening. She was an unusual woman among the predominantly male cohort of American composers born in her time. She founded the San Francisco Tape Center together with Ramón Sender and Morton Subotnick, and wielded her mastery in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy (New York) and in Mills College in Oakland (California), as well as organising several workshops and residencies on deepening the possibilities of listening. Her environmental awareness and her research on the functions of myths and rituals have been a decisive influence for an entire generation of artists and musicians.
