Rosalyn Deutsche

Rosalyn Deutsche is an art historian who teaches modern and contemporary art at Barnard College/Columbia University in New York City. She earned her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She has written extensively and lectured internationally on such interdisciplinary topics as art and urbanism, art and the public sphere, art and the declaration of rights, art and war, and feminist theories of subjectivity in visual representation. Her essays have appeared in many exhibition catalogues and anthologies and in Grey Room, October, Artforum, Art in America, Texte zur Kunst, Society and Space, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, andAssemblage, among other journals, and in numerous translations.Deutsche is on the faculty of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. In May 2009, she delivered the Wellek Library Lectures at the Critical Theory Institute, University of California, Irvine. Deutsche is the author of Evictions: Art and Spatial Politics (MIT Press, 1996) and Hiroshima After Iraq: Three Studies in Art and War (Columbia University Press, 2010). She is currently working on a book about contemporary artworks that commemorate war by de-idealizing it.
