Once again, the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival has arrived at the city (27 October - 2 November) and, here at Tabakalera's film department, we're warming up with a Focus dedicated to one of those directors that have done a 180 in terms of all the conventions of genre film: S. Craig Zahler.

If there is anyone in the film industry that, in recent years, has gone from being a strange guy (novelist, heavy metal musician, horror screenwriter) to a figure to be expected and admired at the most prestigious international film festivals, that person is S. Craig Zahler, cinemagoers' new idol, the shaker of genres, the “Post-Tarantino”, the explosive hybridiser.

His career began at the New York film school, where he specialised in photography. At the same time, his name began to gain strength in the Pulp Literature world: science fiction, crime novels, westerns, etc. He was a man gaining knowledge on the creation of images and of stories. If we add to that his career as a singer, drummer and lyricist for the heavy metal band Realmbuilder (under the name Czar), the mixture yields one of those directors that every X years is presented by the industry as a saviour for the future of the sector.

S. Craig Zahler has just presented his third feature film these days at the Venice film festival, entitled Dragged Across Concrete (2018) – the story of two cops that cross over to the dark side of the law. While the film arrives to commercial cinemas and praise for his work increases, here at Tabakalera we yield to his two first feature films: pure, slow-cooked, genre cinema with fast-paced action and broken bones.
