After my father died, the details of his life were lost in silence. My need to get to know him, reveals a story marked by sexuality and political activism.
Jaime recorded everything - even his own death. From him, his daughter received more than one hundred hours of home videos and with them, many uncertainties. Like many of his generation in Argentina, Jaime lived a clandestine life. In his case, perhaps twice over. The images recorded by Jaime, are re-ignited by his daughter, giving place to questions around desire, sexuality, family and freedom.
Silence is a Falling Body is a journey to an intimate, filial as well as political past.
Playback, Agustina Comedi, Argentina, 2019, 14'
Memories woven through unique footage where the actresses of theatre group Kalas Group’s resist trans genocide by turning the stage into a trench.
In Córdoba, far away from Argentina’s capital city, the end of a military regime promises a spring that doesn’t last long. “La Delpi” is the only survivor from a group of transgender women and drag queens, who began to die of AIDS in the late 80’s. In a Catholic and conservative city, the Kalas Group made their weapons and trenches out of improvised dresses and lip-syncs.
This unique and previously unknown footage, the documentation of a facet of clandestine Argentinian life in the late ‘80s, is as much a letter of farewell as it is a manifesto of friendship.
