The Souvenir, Joanna Hogg, Reino Unido, 2019, 119'
This autobiographical film looks at a powerful episode from Hogg's time as a film student in the 1980s. Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) meets and starts a relationship with Anthony (Tom Burke), a cultured, refined and bitter dandy. We soon learn that Anthony is hiding something, and both start on a spiral in which Julie ends up stealing from her mother (Tilda Swinton, also her real-life mother) to bend to Anthony’s wishes. Distant yet intimate, rather like memories from long ago, The Souvenir takes a subjective and nostalgic look at 1980s England through objects, houses, clothes and colours, as well as the music of The Fall, Robert Wyatt, Joe Jackson, The Specials, Gary Numan and Bauhaus. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
