Based on actual events that occurred in 1994, the film’s main character is 73-year old Alvin Straight, a man that travelled from Laurens, Iowa to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin on his John Deere lawnmower. Alvin decides to set off on this trip to reconnect with his brother who is gravely ill, with whom Alvin has not spoken in more than 10 years. Due to his poor eyesight and little money, he decided to make the trip himself on his lawnmower. The journey is hundreds of miles, and took Alvin more than six weeks to cover.
