After the death of her mother, Silvia Scarlett discovers that her father has swindled funds from the lace company where he works, so they decide to flee Paris. Disguised as a man, Silvia accompanies her father on the boat that will take them to England, a country where they hope to start a new life with the money they earn from the sale of some lace that her father smuggles. On board they will meet Jimmy Monkley, a seasoned scammer who will rat them out at customs to avoid being searched and smuggling their contraband. A story begins here that will lead the three of them to make a living through scams and traveling art. Everything changes when Silvia, still disguised as Silverster Scarlett, meets the painter Michael Fane.
