The opening talk of these sessions will be accompanied by the activist and advocate of human rights –especially of women's rights– Lolita Chávez Ixcaquic, the indigenous Guatemalan leader. Chávez is an international frontrunner in the struggle to preserve natural resources and to denounce the forced displacement of peoples from their land due to mining for natural resources undertaken by foreign and governmental companies. This conference will open up a conversation that revolves around regional and environmental violence and how those two aspects impact the indigenous bodies and groups who call the affected regions their home.
