UNIK | Mary and Max, Adam Elliot

We would like Tabakalera’s shared screen to be even more widely shared. We are working with various communities with the aim of infusing our programming with new ways of doing things and new points of view in film. With this in mind, we have implemented three processes in recent months with three communities that are not typically included in the programming: UNIK, Jóvenes en el cine, and Harrotu ileak. The ultimate aim of these processes is to programme a film session to share experiences and knowledge in this process. This initiative has stood as a joint learning opportunity, both for these communities and Tabakalera, which will be shared with the public through three film sessions.

One of these sessions has been scheduled by the UNIK group (Natural Universe of Kaotic Intelligence). UNIK is an open meeting and creation space that works around the experience, enunciation and politicization of (psychosocial) discomfort. In order to prepare the session, the film programmer Mireia Montané has been invited. During four sessions the group has watched different films, talked about cinema and together they have decided to show a film that deals with issues that concern them.

The claymation tale of the lifelong pen-friendship between Mary Dinkle, a chubby lonely eight year old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44-year-old, severely obese, Jewish man with Aspergers Syndrome living in the chaos of New York. Spanning 20 years and two continents, Mary and Max's friendship survives much, much more than the average diet of life's ups and downs.
