Birgit Hein, Ulrike Ottinger, Sra. Polaroiska, Lizzie Borden, Deborah Stratman... We continue with our look back at women directors whose works have been and are fundamental to the history of avant- garde cinema. This time with a key name of Austrian cinema: VALIE EXPORT, artist and filmmaker that sprang out of the context of Viennese actionism of the 60s, and also a key name in feminist art thanks to her guerrilla performances and her direct action audio-visual work. We shall look back over her filmography and performance work in four sessions.

"In 1968 a woman wearing a leather jacket and pants with the crotch cut out, showing her genitals, entered a cinema in Munich during a screening and walked between the rows of seats. This way she provoked the public confronted to a present and active feminine body instead of projecting her libido in the images; most of the spectators, embarrassed, left the cinema little by little. This action entitled 'Action Pants. Genital Panic' was followed the next year by a picture where the same woman with the same attire and holding a rifle, posed sitting with the legs opened looking directly at the camera, giving room to an image several times reclaimed as a Feminist Art sign.

This work is one of the possible access points to the prolific trajectory of the Austrian artist VALIE EXPORT (Linz, 1940). During more than five decades, VALIE EXPORT developed experimental projects, from performance and installation to the photography, video and film. In her work, EXPORT reflects about gender through the experimentation with her own body and approaches the material conditions of the representation. The film production by VALIE EXPORT, solid supporter of the expanded cinema, makes her one of the most relevant creators of the second half of the XX Century".
