The relationship between structure and ornament, between craftsmanship and art are constants in the work of Nora Aurrekoetxea Etxebarria. These themes often are paralleled with issues such as sexuality and psychology in relation to emotions and the intimate. In collaboration with the German stylist Milena Dieckman, the artist presents the sculpture DIVA(2021) made with hair-extensions, a material that, despite being considered a waste product, when well braided becomes a stable structure. Hair, especially women’s hair, is a material that carries experiences and emotions. In this case, braiding is conceived as a familiar gesture, and a gesture of care, because of its everyday nature and the proximity it generates. At the same time it is a gesture that transforms a thread into a support framework, thus turning ornament into structure.
