Curation and Mediation: Negotiating with Reality is the last of the four modules that has contained the 2016-2017 Curating Programme of the Artists’ Space of Tabakalera. This last seminar, that will analyse the mediation through the perspective of curatorial practice, will be directed by the curator and educator Nora Sternfeld. The module will also include the participation of Ahmed Al-Nawas (curator and educator based in Helsinki) and Ayşe Güleç (cultural worker, educator and activist based in Kassel).
How can we learn something that doesn’t exist yet? On the one hand, this sounds like a paradox, but isn’t it actually what radical education is all about? Learning as a political and emancipatory practice has always been understood as a process towards another possibility: as a way to understand the social relations in order to change them; to understand them as they might only be understandable in another world. And maybe by doing so this one might change…
In this new module we will follow educational, curatorial and artistic strategies as intervention, investigation, imagination and/or reflection. Rather than teaching or representing valuable objects and objective values they have entered a process of “negotiating with reality”: they act in the space between representation and presence and challenge what can be seen, done and said.
This module is run as a workshop in which we think together about a possible future for educational, curatorial and para-institutional practices. We will discuss curating and education as ways of being active, as practices that enable processes of collaborative knowledge production with an unexpected outcome. This implies revising the role of space and education, history and research.
The module includes presentations, readings, screenings, discussions and workshops
