Gradients is a site-specific audiovisual piece conceived through creative code, algorithms, and generative processes created by Playmodes and curated by Irma Vilà Òdena for Kursaal’s façade.
The architectural reticule designed by Rafael Moneo for Kursaal’s façade serves as inspiration for Playmodes, which transforms this matrix into a creative canvas. The lines, columns, and cells that make up this architectural lattice act as geometric containers for a meticulous study of the perception of light and volume. In the search for a perceptual metamorphosis of the limits and volumetry of the building, a 21st century illusion emerges: a minimalist and essential audiovisual dialogue that highlights the geometric, chromatic, and material austerity of Moneo’s work.
Through this framework of austerity, and in close connection with the morphology of Kursaal, a new visual skin is created to initiate an intimate dialogue with the architecture. This skin erases the boundaries between traditional perception of the “screen”, integrating itself as an additional stratum of the physical construction. The kinetic dynamism of these new layers of light in movement lend the building a poetic dimension, making it clear that the architecture is “alive”. Beyond its role as a mere static container, the Kursaal media-façade coexists in symbiosis with Rafael Moneo’s original project, reaffirming the palpable presence of the architecture and its transformation through light.
Gradients will be presented from 14 through 17 September 2023 within the framework of Tabakalera’s collaboration with the Irekiak Gallery Weekend.
