Marisa Belausteguigoitia

Full time professor in the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Holds a PhD in Ethnic and Gender Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. She is head of the Gender Studies Programme at UNAM and currently manages the UNAM project titled Mujeres en Espiral. Sistema de justicia, perspectiva de género y pedagogías en resistencia (Spiralling Women. The justice system, gender perspective and resistance pedagogies) (2008 to date), which supports imprisoned women. Her work looks at the relationships between gender, race, sexuality and culture in Latin America, and identifies routes to access to justice. In particular, she analyses how judicial, artistic and educational practices help construct dialogue around the empowerment and resistance of imprisoned women, and a public university tuned in to pressing social needs.

She is widely published: 11 books (6 of which were co-authored), and more than 100 national and international articles. Her most recent books are Critical Terms in Caribbean and Latin-American Thought. Historical and Institutional Trajectories, co-authored with Yolanda Martínez-San Miguel and Ben Sifuentes Juáregui from Rutgers University, and Des/posesión: Género, Territorio y Luchas por la Autodeterminación (Dis/possession: Gender, Territory and Struggles for Self-Determination), co-authored with María Josefinda Saldaña-Portillo (2015) from New York University (NYU).

She is a recipient of the Omecíhuat Medal from the Mexico City Women's Institute (2010) and the Margherita von Brentano prize from the Free University of Berlin (2013), awarded to the MISEAL project (measures for social inclusion and equality in further education institutions in Latin America). Her documentary titled Nos Pintamos Solas, co-directed with Mariana X. Rivera, won the prize for best direction and best film at the FICFUSA 2015 Festival in Colombia.  She is qualified to teach on degree programmes (1984) and postgraduate studies (2001), and is a full time professor in the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), rated ‘D’ within the ‘PRIDE’ performance bonus system for full time academic staff. She is level II in the SNI (National System of Researchers, Mexico).
