The Levenshtein distance, edit distance or distance between words is an algorithm used in spellcheckers. It is the minimum number of operations required to transform one string of characters into another. An operation may be an insertion, elimination or substitution of a character. The algorithm was invented by the Russian scientist Vladimir Levenshtein in 1965.
