An activist, theorist, and visual artist that questions the egalitarian and democratic promises of new communication technologies through irony and the use of their presentation strategies, and criticises the will to control hidden behind their apparent transparency. Founder of Technologies To The People, historic member of irational.org (international benchmark for art on the net) and director of numerous internet projects such as e-barcelona.org, e-stuttgart.org, and the Postcapital Archive (1989-2001). His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions around the world, including Manifesta 4, the 53rd Venice Biennale, Helsinki Photography Biennial, Guangzhou Image Triennial, Kyiv Biennial, and the 3rd Seoul International Biennale of Media Art. In 2015, Manuel J. Borja-Villel held an exploration of his work at the Reina Sofia National Art Museum. In 2017, he participated in documenta14 in Athens and Kassel.
