“Making Conversation” is inspired by evening listening sessions that took place in Ubud Bali (Indonesia) in 2019.
Many of the compositions of the artist take their form through non-musical patterns and structures that she observes in her day-to-day life. Aural landscapes that take place around us everyday; domestic sounds, street activity, natural sounds, industrial and machine sounds and the interplay between all of these things. The way that these abstract and seemingly unrelated sounds coexist creates a fascinating interplay, which can be heard or interpreted as a unique music of its own.
“Making Conversation” is inspired by evening listening sessions that took place in Ubud Bali (Indonesia) in 2019. During the listening and recording sessions, artist crys cole gained awareness about the complex interaction between the sounds occurring around her, between amphibians and lizards, as well as the communications of insects, domestic animals (roosters, dogs), artificial sounds (planes, vehicles, passing conversations, and nocturnal activities), and other sounds that were difficult to recognise and place. This incredibly dense and complex sound environment led the artist to create pieces inspired by the patterns, forms, movements, tones, and textures that she had observed. The piece does not reproduce those field recordings made, but rather reinterprets that sound landscape, using it as a foundation for the production of newly created pieces for other instruments, electronics, voices, and sounds. Memory also plays a critical role in this process. The recordings can only portray so much of the lived experience, but they act as a doorway to recollections, memories, sensations and more that played a critical role in guiding the compositional process.
crys cole created the accompanying drawings and sketches during automatic drawing sessions, allowing her hands to move and react instinctively through subconscious direction while listening to the Bali recordings and the developing sound composition. The drawings and the sound composition were created in tandem, relating back and forth to each other in a continuous process. Rather than act as a graphic ‘score’, the visual works are companions to the sound piece, illustrating parts of the intuitive process that assisted the development of the final work.
