Straub-Huillet take as a reference and adapt, in their own particular way, one of the narrative experiments by Bertolt Brecht: The Business Affairs of Mr. Julius Caesar, an experimental novel which is a combination of historical novel, social notes, journalistic account and epic theater.

The film shows, through a series of encounters with “ancient” Romans, how economic and political manipulation in ancient Rome paved the way for Julius Caesar’s dictatorship.
